Toronto Victorious In Series With Anaheim

July 31: Anaheim 6, Toronto 2

Every fifth game, Jered Weaver starts for Anaheim and they get to look like a half-way decent team for awhile. Weaver yielded just one run on a solo shot by Jose Bautista in his six innings of work, dropping his ERA to 3.05, fifth best in the league.

Bautista drove a second solo blast against Brendan Donnelly, but the Angels offense had already gone to work against Jimmy Key. A two-run Troy Glaus homer in the sixth highlighted a balanced attack.

August 1: Toronto 4, Anaheim 2

Doyle Alexander got back to form in this one after a couple of hiccup starts. He allowed just three hits and one walk in eight innings. One of those hits was another homer by Glaus, who has been an out-of-nowhere source of power for Anaheim all season. His .494 slugging percentage is third best in the Expansion Division.

Bautista also homered in back-to-back games. His three-run shot capped a four-run second inning that gave Toronto all the offense they needed.

Dave Stieb had his best day of what has been a frustrating year. It was his second complete game, and first time allowing no more than one run in a start.

Nolan Ryan was pretty awful for Anaheim. John Lackey followed Ryan with four shutout innings, and might have convinced Toronto skipper Cito Gaston to give Lackey the start the next time Ryan’s turn comes around.
