Seattle Stays Atop Expansion Division With Series Win in Cleveland

Each team smacked a dozen hits and two homers. Cleveland errors by Lou Boudreau and Joe Jackson helped Seattle score two unearned runs that tilted things Seattle’s way.

Freddy Garcia continues to surprise in the Mariners rotation and has a 3.09 ERA in his last 11 starts. After twirling five shutout innings, Garcia faltered and the first four Naps batters reached in the sixth inning. Mark Langston came in and nicely limited the damage.

Edgar Martinez and Alvin Davis each clubbed a solo homer in the eighth to help the Mariners claim the game and the series.

Felix Hernandez continues to fight it for Seattle and saw his ERA swell to 5.32. He’s yielded nine homers in his last six starts.

The Seattle batsmen swatted nine singles and took seven walks from Vean Gregg, but no extra base hits, and they stranded 16. The Naps lined two homers and six doubles.

Vean Gregg’s excellent season rolled on with a one-run complete game. His ERA in his last seven starts is under two, and he moved into the top 10 ERAs in the league at 3.41.

The teams split their six games for the year.
