It was Bizarro Day as Andy Messersmith broke off his first complete game and first shutout against the strong Orioles lineup and the Angel offense mashed against Erik Bedard, Hoyt Wilhelm, and Jim Palmer. Anaheim’s Bobby Grich, Brian Downing, Rod Carew, and Jim Fregosi all reached safely thrice to boost Anaheim to one of the most lopsided upsets of the season.

Jack Powell turned the world right-side-up again and made mincemeat of the Angels lineup in a quick shutout. Dean Chance was good against the Baltimore lineup, but a walk preceded three straight singles in the third to score all the runs of the game.

Baltimore took five of six in the season series.
