Detroit Betters Cleveland In Battle At Bottom of Standings

July 22: Detroit 14, Cleveland 6

Bob Feller had a great first half in Cleveland’s bullpen, and got promoted to the rotation after the All-Star break. Things have fallen apart quickly as he’s tried to stretch out his innings. Feller walked seven in less than three innings of work before Sam McDowell, the man Feller had replaced in the rotation, came on in long relief. Player-manager Lou Boudreau said after the game that Feller would go back to the ‘pen and McDowell take back his spot in the rotation.

McDowell was also far from sharp and handed out six free passes. Every single Tiger in the lineup took at least one walk, and the team added 15 hits to their 13 walks. Ty Cobb, Bobby Veach, Harry Heilmann, Charles Gehringer, and Alan Trammell all reached safely four times apiece.

July 24: Detroit 12, Cleveland 3

The double-digit runs pendulum swung back to Detroit’s side in the finale as they abused Cleveland starter Corey Kluber. Detroit’s leading hitter Harry Heilmann knocked four singles and Norm Cash took a walk and smacked a single, double, and homer. Hal Newhouser went the distance for the Tigers and the teams finished the series tied in the cellar.
