All-Star Series Game 3: Originals Make It A Clean Sweep

July 5–Toronto

Original All-Stars 5, Expansion All-Stars 3

skydome

Doyle Alexander got the start in front of his home-town Blue Jays fans, and things went swimmingly for him for the first two innings, after which neither team had scored. The wheels came off in the third though, starting with a Joe Cronin double, continued with back-to-back walks by Ted Williams and Babe Ruth, and back-to-back singles by Lou Gehrig and Tris Speaker that added up to a 3-0 lead for the Original All-Stars. There were also still two men on and only one out. Randy Johnson came on and quickly induced a double play to end the rally.

Babe Ruth added a solo homer in the fifth, his second homer in as many games, and Boggs, Grich, and Dickey got consecutive hits in the sixth to stretch the Originals lead to 5-0, and it looked like the Expansioners wouldn’t be keeping up nearly as well as they had in both games of the double-header the day before.

But the Expansioners weren’t quite done. Trout and Delgado both singled in the sixth to get their first run. But by the time Eddie Guardado came on for the Originals in the bottom of the ninth, his squad still held a comfortable 5-1 lead. Alvin Davis started the bottom of the ninth with a pinch-hit, solo tater, Delgado followed that up with a single, and George Brett followed that up with a double. Suddenly the tying run was at the plate with no one out.

Out came Guardado in favor of his Minnesota teammate Firpo Marberry, and up came pinch-hitter Fred McGriff to wild applause from the Toronto crowd. But McGriff grounded out to Marberry without advancing the runners, and then Ivan Rodriguez also grounded into an unproductive out. But Alex Rodriguez kept hope alive with a one-RBI single, and Craig Biggio, the hottest hitter in the league, came to the plate representing the winning run. Alas, Marberry induced his third groundout to finish off the series sweep for the Original All-Stars.

No one in the Expansion locker room wanted to hear about moral victories after the game, but–considering the Originals have two more teams and roughly 70 more years from which to draw talent–it really was a strong showing by the Expansion conglomerate to be within one or two runs in each game.

The Rhubarb will be taking an extended break, perhaps around a month, before diving back in for the second half. Cheers.
