All-Star Series Game 2: Originals Take Another Tight One

July 4–Fenway Park
Game Two

Original All-Stars 4, Expansion All-Stars 3

Rickey Henderson led off the bottom of the first doing Rickey things, in this case singling to get on base. Two batters later, Babe Ruth did Babe Ruth things, blasting a titanic homer against Jamie Moyer to lift the Originals to a quick 2-0 lead. It would have surprised no one if that was just the beginning of an Original All-Stars drubbing of the Expansion babies, but the Expansioners acquitted themselves well again. Moyer allowed no more runs in his four inning start.

Errors by Lou Gehrig and Rickey in the fourth inning were sandwiched around an Ichiro Suzuki single, which cut the score to 2-1. But in the bottom of the fifth, Kelvim Escobar got wild and walked three while giving up a pair of runs, stretching the Original’s lead to 4-1. That turned out to be the end of the scoring for the Originals, and the Expansioners kept trying to chip away. An Alvin Davis single and Lance Berkman double cut the score to 4-2 in the sixth, and a Craig Biggio walk and Mike Trout single in  the eighth made it a 4-3 game.

Pinch hitter Jeff Bagwell started the bottom of the ninth promisingly with a walk against Darren O’Day. But the Orioles hurler quickly dashed the Expansioners hopes for a comeback with a strikeout to Carlos Delgado and then a double play ball from Roberto Alomar, and the heavily favored Original squad swept the double-header with identical 4-3 scores.

After the long day, the squads boarded planes for Toronto where they would clash for a third and final game the next day.
