All-Star Series Game 1: Expansioners 1 Out Away With 3 Run Lead, Originals Stage Stunning Comeback

July 4–Fenway Park
Game One

Original All-Stars 4, Expansion All-Stars 3 (11 innings)

Wade Boggs

It was an absolute heart-breaker for the Expansion All-Stars in the opening game of a three game All-Star series. For 8.2 innings, the Expansion pitchers were sublime and suffocated and shutout the Original’s dream team lineup. Expansion manager Cito Gaston had planned on using his starter Jered Weaver for three innings, but Weaver was so magnificent that Gaston couldn’t bring himself to pull the Angels pitcher until after he’d hurled five masterful innings. Singles by Wade Boggs and Joe Jackson were the only hits the Originals could muster against Weaver.

The Expansion bats also got off to an excellent start led by an Anaheim player. After Craig Biggio led off the third inning with a walk against Johan Santana, Mike Trout followed it with a two-run bomb to open the scoring. Trout then started a run scoring rally in the fifth inning with a lead off single against Ed Walsh. A Lance Berkman walk moved Trout to second, and George Brett laced a two-out single to drive in Trout.

A series of four Original relievers shut out the Expansioners from there, but a string of Expansion twirlers were also tough, picking up where Weaver left off. Bret Saberhagen, Wade Davis, and Troy Percival each worked one scoreless frame.

The 3-0 lead was handed to Arthur Rhodes to lock down in the bottom of the ninth, and it started perfectly with two quick outs. The Expansion bench was ready to explode from their dugout to celebrate their stunning shutout victory when Bobby Grich launched a solo tater against Rhodes. The shutout was gone, but it was still a 3-1 lead with just one out to go. Eddie Collins came up as a pinch-hitter and stroked a single, and Lou Boudreau followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Ruh-roh.

The Red Sox faithful roared as Wade Boggs took his place in the batter’s box for all the marbles. Gaston elected to stick with the lefty Rhodes to face the lefty hitter, but soon regretted it when Boggs drilled a double to the right field gap to tie the game. A dejected Rhodes was pulled in favor of Scott Downs, who preserved the tie with a strikeout of Joe Jackson.

After a scoreless 10th, pinch-hitter Alvin Davis led off the top of the 11th with a single and was replaced with pinch-runner Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez tore for second on a 1-17 steal chance, but Carlton Fisk whipped a perfect 19 throw to Boudreau to cut down Rodriguez for a critical out, and the game remained tied heading into the bottom of the 11th.

Ken Singleton started it off with a single against new Expansion pitcher Larry Anderson. Bobby Grich then flew out for the first out. Next up, Fisk singled Singleton to second. Boudreau flew out for out number two, and again Boggs came to the plate in an off-the charts high leverage situation. And again Boggs came through, poking a single deep enough that Singleton was able to sprint home safely to finish an incredible game.

The post-game mood in the Expansion locker room was dour, but they had played a tremendous game, and hung with the Originals far better than anyone had expected. And they had little time to stew–the first pitch of game two of the doubleheader was just half an hour away.
