Houston Upsets Cleveland, Thome Mashes Taters

June 23: Houston 10, Cleveland 9 (10 innings)

Both starters had nothing and got slammed, but both bullpens had tired long relievers, so Corey Kluber and Roy Oswalt gutted out more innings than either manager would have liked. It ended up a perfect wash. They each gave up three homers and eight runs before giving way to stingy bullpens.

Craig Biggio led off the bottom of the 10th with a walk, Jeff Bagwell doubled him to third, Moises Alou walked to load the bases with no outs, and Lance Berkman hit what would have been a perfect double play ball, except a double play did Cleveland no good. Biggio got a great jump from third and beat the throw home to walk it off for Houston.

June 24: Houston 2, Cleveland 1

After that ugly game, Stan Coveleski and Nolan Ryan put on a proper pitchers duel. The first Naps batter of the game, Tris Speaker, singled and came around to score, but that was the extent of Cleveland’s offense. Ryan went into lockdown mode from there, and Billy Wagner finished off the last five outs of the game.

Coveleski was awfully good too, but Houston managed to bunch together hits by Moises Alou, Cesar Cedeno, and Art Howe in the second to put together two runs.

Jim Thome had 11 total bases on a walk, double, and two ding dongs. His three homers in the series moved him up into a tie for fourth most homers in the league. Vean Gregg was splendid in a complete game for Cleveland.
