June 20: Detroit 14, Kansas City 7

The Royals seemed to get off on the right foot as they began a tough stretch of nine straight games against Original Division teams. The Tigers started the top of the second by making two fielding errors, and Hal McRae, Darrell Porter, and Willie Wilson all followed up with hits to give KC a 4-0 lead.

But then the Tigers batters ambushed Danny Jackson in the bottom of the frame, hanging six runs on him in the inning. Relievers Dan Quisenberry, Jeff Montgomery, and Kelvin Herrera kept coughing up runs to a ferocious Detroit attack. Harry Heilmann was 4-for-5 with a dinger, George Kell poked four singles, and Bill Freehan added a single, double, and homer to the barrage.

Kevin Appier and Justin Verlander matched up well. A John Mayberry error in the third was a killer for KC, but Danny Tartabull put KC right back in the game with a tying homer in the top of the ninth, which was just the team’s fourth and final hit of the game. But Norm Cash put an end to the game soon after with a walk-off tater against Joakim Soria in the ninth.

Bret Saberhagen was just what the doctor ordered for KC to avoid the sweep. He cruised through seven efficient shut-out innings before giving way to Wade Davis in the eighth after putting a couple of runners on. Danny Tartabull homered for a second straight day, and has five homers in his last nine games. He was perfect at the plate in this one with two singles and a walk in addition to the ya-ya.
