Baltimore started the series off with a bang, drilling a wild Barry Zito for seven runs and sending him to the showers after recording only two outs. Matt Wieters put the exclamation mark on the inning with a three run bomb. Wieters added a single and a double later in the game.

Rube Waddell and the A’s were doing fine through four and a half innings, leading 3-1. But then came the inning from Hades in the bottom of the fifth. Waddell walked Wieters and Eddie Murray, gave up singles to Bobby Grich, Ken Singleton, and George Sisler, plus Adam Jones made a two base error, all before a single out was recorded. Dennis Eckersely came in to try to put out the fire, but instead poured gasoline all over it. Brady Anderson took Eck yard with a grand slam.

Every A’s batter had a hit. Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Jason Giambi combined for three singles, three doubles, and two homers, but it still wasn’t enough after the meltdown in the fifth.
