Roy Oswalt and Jimmy Key matched each other almost pitch for pitch for a tense eight innings, each allowing only one run on solo homers. When Larry Anderson took over mound duties for Houston in the ninth, Shawn Green led off with a single and then swiped second base. Lloyd Moseby knocked him in for the winner.

June 19: Houston 9, Toronto 8 (10 innings)

Juan Guzman and Nolan Ryan matched each other the next day as well, but only in having similarly terrible days. Houston ran up a 6-1 lead in the first two innings, but Nolan Ryan was helpless in the third and watched the lead vanish on two walks, a Carlos Delgado double, Rance Mulliniks single, and a three-run smash by Tony Fernandez, his first round-tripper of the year. The game was knotted 6-6 and both starters were done before the top of the third was over.

The two bullpens both gave up two runs between the fourth and ninth innings to send the game to extras. Mark Eichhorn took the mound for Toronto in the bottom of the 10th and his dispiriting season continued as the Astros only needed to send two batters to the box in the 10th to plate the walk-off run. Juan Cruz singled for his third of the hit of the day, stole second, and Lance Berkman doubled him home. It was Berkman’s second double of the day, and he drilled homer #15 as well. Berkman has been the most prodigious hitter in the Expansion Division so far this season.
