Bombs Away For Anaheim As They Sweep Slumping Texas

grichJune 17: Anaheim 11, Texas 2

It was, um, not Yu Darvish’s day. Bobby Grich jumped him for a two-run bomb in the first inning, Jim Fregosi yanked a solo shot in the second, and Grich popped a three-run job in the second.

Anaheim’s Rod Carew & Bobby Grich, hitting one and two in the lineup, went bonkers. Carew was 4-for-5 with two doubles and scored four times, and Grich 5-for-5 with a double, two dongs, and four runs. The rest of the Angels lineup probably could have just taken the day off, but they contributed another eight hits anyway.

Mike Trout looked like Mike Trout in this game, something he hasn’t done as often as Anaheim has needed this year. Following a Tim Salmon walk in the first, Trout slammed a triple to drive in the game’s first run. Later in the game he hit two singles and sped around the bases to score after both. The rest of the Angels lineup was fairly quiet, but Jered Weaver held down the Texas bats while Trout took over.

June 19: Anaheim 7, Texas 4

Anaheim was dropping bombs in the finale. Bobby Grich had another monster game, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a dinger. The Angels racked up 14 extra base hits in the series, bumping their team slugging percentage from .373 to .384 by series’ end. This is the first series of more than two games that Anaheim has swept.

The worm has turned in different directions for these two clubs. The last place Angels are on a nice 8-3 stretch, while the Rangers have dropped seven in a row, dropping from first to fourth place in the process.
