Oakland Grinds Out Series Win Over Anaheim

June 10: Anaheim 8, Oakland 5

The lowly Angels surprised the slumping A’s in the opener by jumping Rube Waddell for five runs in the first seven innings. Anaheim just about threw it away in the eighth when Reggie Jackson homered to get within a run and Tim Salmon made a fielding error that helped the A’s tie the score. But five Angels reached base in the top of the ninth versus Rollie Fingers to grab the lead right back. Oakland dropped below .500 for the first time this season.

Runs were hard to come by again in the series finale, which was not surprising considering the two starters have two of the best ERAs in the league. Tim Hudson was especially nasty, and allowed zero earned in a complete game to drop his ERA to 3.02, fifth best in the loop. Jason Giambi was 1-for-1 with three walks as the A’s climbed back over .500.
