KC Steals Series In Houston

May 29: Kansas City 6, Houston 1

The Royals were feeling hitterish in this one. George Brett rang up his first four-hit game of the year, and even stole two bases against Alan Ashby’s sub-par arm. Danny Jackson was excellent for 6.1 innings. Willie Wilson put an end to Houston’s burgeoning rally in the seventh inning with an impressive throw to home to cut down Art Howe trying to score.

The first two hitters for each team in the first inning came around to score, first on a Mayberry double for KC, then a Jeff Bagwell bomb for Houston.

Lance Berkman’s go-ahead homer in the fifth came after the inning could have been concluded. Hal McRae made an error in left field, and Berkman made the Royals pay by drilling the difference maker. Mike Cuellar made one of his better starts of the year for Houston.

J.R. Richard just couldn’t find his stuff in this one, and his defense wasn’t doing him any favors. Willie Wilson set the table nicely at the top of the lineup with his first four-hit game of the year, plus stole two bases to extend his league lead. Wilson has swiped 31 in 36 attempts.
