Mickey Mantle led the game off with a bomb. Oakland took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI triple by Al Simmons, but the Yanks scored seven unanswered the rest of the way. Tony Lazzeri broke a seven game hitless streak with three knocks.

It was a battle of southpaws as Lefties Gomez and Grove started for NY and Oakland respectively. Grove had the slightly better go of it, holding the evil empire to four measly hits in his eight innings. Gomez did not allow Oakland a single extra base hit, but the A’s put on singles parades in a couple innings to tally four.

May 28: New York 9, Oakland 5
The rubber match determined whether the teams would end up with identical records in third place or if Oakland would build a two game cushion ahead of NY. It was an exciting, back-and-forth affair for six innings. A Home Run Baker error in the second opened the door for Bernie Williams’ three run blast.
With the score knotted at five in the top of the seventh, Lou Gehrig doubled, Babe Ruth singled, and Charlie Keller hung dong. Goose Gossage and Mariano Rivera shut the door on Oakland from there.
Gehrig is hitting in another dimension than the rest of the league. He’s slugging .700, a galaxy ahead of second place Ruth at .630. And Gehrig has created 10 more runs than second place Tris Speaker.
