Seattle Surprises in Defeat v. Clemens, But Boston Takes Series

May 26: Boston 9, Seattle 1

Jamie Moyer’s day got off to a terrible start. Wade Boggs and Tris Speaker are two of the better hitters in the league, but home run hitters they are not. In this one though, they started the game with back-to-back dingers. Moyer recovered nicely after that shock and only allowed one more run in seven innings of work. Seattle relievers Michael Jackson and Jeff Nelson gave up more runs in the eighth and ninth, and the Mariners could only scratch across one unearned run facing Pedro Martinez for seven innings and Derek Lowe for two.

With Roger Clemens facing Freddy Garcia, the Mariners overcame long odds to pull out a victory in this one. Clemens was excellent except for a long second inning in which he walked two, hit a batter, and Ken Griffey, Robinson Cano, Kyle Seager, and Alvin Davis all hit singles. Garcia was not particularly impressive, but managed to at least keep the score tied through his 5.2 innings. Seattle’s Arthur Rhodes, Tom Wilhelmsen, and J.J. Putz were lights-out from there, and Edgar Martinez thrilled the home crowd when he led off the bottom of the 10th with a home run against Jonathan Papelbon.

It was another mismatch the next day with Cy Young facing Erik Hanson, and this one went more as expected. The Mariners scored a lone run against Young. Hanson was actually pretty good in his seven innings, but the Red Sox tacked on four more runs in the ninth against Michael Jackson to polish off the series victory.
