May 22: Toronto 8, Seattle 4

Shawn Green exploded for a double, two dingers, and four RBI. Lloyd Moseby continued his incredible hitting with a single and two doubles. It was a short, unpleasant stay on the mound for M’s starter Jamie Garcia.

The bottom third of Toronto’s order did most of the damage in this one. Kelly Gruber, Gregg Zaun, and Alex Gonzalez aren’t names that make pitchers too nervous, but in this one they were a combined 6-for-11 with a walk, two doubles, and three runs.

The Seattle bats were noisy in this one, every Mariner collecting at least one hit. Two Toronto errors in the sixth inning helped Seattle’s cause as well. Mariners sixth starter Mike Moore had a day to remember, taking a no-hitter through 7.1 innings. The only two hits he gave up all day happened to come back to back and allowed Toronto to score the only earned run Moore allowed in an impressive complete game.

The next day it was Toronto’s sixth starter’s turn to shine. Shaun Marcum threw eight excellent innings and was rarely in trouble. Toronto scored all of their runs on a Carlos Delgado grand salami.

Toronto moved up into a tie for second place while Seattle dropped a couple notches down to fifth.
