Babe & Lou Drop Bombs As NY Takes Series v. Cleveland

May 22: New York 10, Cleveland 3

Lou Gehrig was perfect at the plate with a walk and three singles, and his mates drove him home three times. Babe Ruth smashed a pair of homers in his first multi-homer game to tie Gehrig for the league lead at 12. Ray Caldwell pitched his third straight complete game.

Lou must not have appreciated the company atop the HR leaderboard, because he had his first multi-homer game the next day. They came in his first two plate appearances, after which he had already driven in five runs.

Joe DiMaggio has been in a slump all season, but busted out in this one with three doubles and a dong. Unfortunately for him, his mates had a rare mediocre day at the plate, and the top of the Naps order was on fire. Tris Speaker, Joe Jackson, Nap Lajoie, and Jim Thome were a combined 6-for-17 with four walks and a homer to help the Naps avoid getting swept.

The Yanks find themselves tied with Baltimore for third place, and Cleveland three games back from the four teams bunched up at the head of the Original Division.
