Boston Wins 2 of 3 In Chicago In Well-Pitched Series

May 23: Boston 3, Chicago 2

A Frank Thomas error in the second inning proved costly for Chicago. It would have been the third out, but instead the next batter, Carlton Fisk, drilled a two-run homer.

The game nearly got away from Cy Young in the bottom of the ninth. Young had a 3-0 lead, but Eddie Collins and Minnie Minoso both singled to open the ninth. Joe Jackson popped up for out number one, but Frank Thomas singled and drove in Collins to cut Boston’s lead to 3-1. That prompted a trip to the mound by manager Joe Cronin, who called in Jonathan Papelbon to replace Young. Papelbon’s first batter, Chet Lemon, knocked a single to load the bases. Next up, Miguel Ordonez grounded into a RBI fielder’s choice to make the score 3-2 with two outs. Papelbon then got Luke Appling to pop up to snuff out Chicago’s near-comeback.

Smoky Joe Wood and Eddie Cicotte put on an excellent duel. It was a 2-2 stalemate from the bottom of the sixth inning to the top of the 12th. The Red Sox broke through against Terry Forster in the 12th on a Bobby Doerr double and Wade Boggs single.

Mel Parnell made his first start of the year for Boston, and it wasn’t a disaster, but it was the only start in the series for either team that was less than stellar. Two bases-loaded walks in the fifth were killers.
