Baltimore Puts Together Impressive Sweep In Oakland

frobMay 22: Baltimore 9, Oakland 4

Frank Robinson had his finest day of the season with a single, double, and two homers. And he also reached in his only plate appearance without a hit, thanks to a Home Run Baker error. Robinson scored four and drove in four. Bobby Grich’s dream season kept on keepin’ on with his 10th dinger.

Rickey Henderson reached safely four times for Oakland but could only make it around the diamond once in the game.

Urban Shocker looks to be getting back on track after a disastrous first five starts. His last four games have been at least decent, and this one was his best yet.

Eddie Rommel had a day to forget in a spot start for Oakland. After throwing a perfect first inning, the first six batters of the second inning reached safely. Five of them came around to score. Rube Walberg threw zeroes the rest of the way for Oakland, but the damage was done.

The second inning went down in flames again for Oakland the next day. It wasn’t all starter Barry Zito’s fault—Home Run Baker booted two ground balls in the inning, making all four runs in the inning unearned.

The Oakland bats were sleepy again, save a three-run Al Simmons shot in the eighth.

Baltimore was mighty impressive the whole series, and positioned themselves squarely in the mix of the top Original Division teams with Boston, Oakland, and New York. The Orioles passed New York for third place, and got within a game of second place Oakland.
