Chicago Wins 16 Inning Marathon, But Oakland Takes Series

May 19: Chicago 2, Oakland 1 (16 innings)

A fantastic battle and the longest game in Rhubarb history. After Chi starter Ted Lyons gave up just one run in 7.1, bullpen arms Terry Forster, Keith Foulke, Hoyt Wilhelm, and Matt Thornton combined for 8.2 shutout innings. Oakland starter Barry Zito also only gave up one run, and his relief mates Rollie Fingers, Justin Duchscherer, Dennis Eckersley, and Eddie Rommel combined for eight shutout innings of their own before finally yielding a second run to Chicago. Rommel was pitching in the 16th when Joe Jackson led off with a single, Frank Thomas singled him to third, and Chet Lemon singled Jackson in.

Home Run Baker led off the bottom of the 16th with a single of his own and made it to third with just one out. But Eddie Joost hit into a double play to end the marathon.

The teams enjoyed those extra innings so much they played a bonus inning the next day as well. Chicago mounted a two run rally to tie it in the top of the ninth, but a Rickey Henderson walk and stolen base and a Jason Giambi single (his third of the day) ended this one in the bottom of the 10th.

Lefty Grove threw a complete game, providing some much needed relief for the beleaguered Oakland bullpen. The White Sox bullpen wasn’t as lucky, Red Faber only mustering 3.2 innings. The A’s bats loaded up their five runs in a single inning, slapping six singles and drawing a walk in the fourth.
