Doyle Alexander continued his dream season for Toronto. Bret Saberhagen also continued a strong start, albeit in a losing effort. Alexander finds himself with the fourth best ERA in the league at 2.61 and Saberhagen owns the ninth best at 3.09.

The Royals needed Bud Black to make a spot start in Jose Rosado’s spot, and Black came up yuge, not allowing an earned run in six innings toil. With the score knotted at two in the eighth, George Brett knocked a one-out triple, and Danny Tartabull singled him home. Greg Holland came in to protect the one-run lead in the top of the ninth, but an Ernie Whitt double and two sac flies tied up the contest. It remained that way until the bottom of the 11th when Tartabull and Hal McRae both reached on singles. Alcides Escobar came through with a two-out single and got mobbed by his teammates.

Dave Stieb quieted down the KC bats the next day while Toronto roughed up Mark Gubicza in his short outing.

The two teams have become well acquainted this season, already having met 12 times. Each team has claimed six wins in the meetings.
