Walter Johnson had his first bad start of the year. Johnson claimed he was not fatigued after throwing over 11 innings in his previous start, and that “it just wasn’t my day today.” Adam Jones became the first player to manage a home run against Johnson. Walter went 76.2 innings without allowing a round-tripper. Eddie Murray contributed three hits and a triple while Erik Bedard, Darren O’Day, and Gregg Olson combined for the shutout.

It was Johan Santana’s turn in the Minnesota rotation, but Santana was scratched with elbow soreness. Dutch Leonard got the call for his first start of the season, and did much more than anyone expected of him against a strong Orioles lineup. Leonard kept Baltimore completely scoreless for eight strong innings, and it was only an unearned run in the ninth that prevented Leonard’s day from being completely untarnished. Sam Rice hustled out two triples and a single for Minnesota.
