Rangers Again Take 3 of 4 v. Astros In Battle of Texas: Part Deux

The Rangers & Astros played a four game set in Arlington at the beginning of May, and the Rangers were winners of three. It was Houston’s turn to host a four game series:

May 15: Texas 4, Houston 1

Lance Berkman homered for the FIFTH straight game, but his solo ding dong was the only run Houston could get off Yu Darvish in his six-plus innings of work. A trio of Texas relievers threw three shutout innings in relief. J.R. Richard was good for Houston and traded zeroes with Darvish for six innings before Texas was able to get him for two in the seventh.

May 16: Houston 8, Texas 4

All Berkman could manage in this game was a triple. “I’m slipping,” he joked after the game. Rangers starter Charlie Hough had an odd day. If you take out the third inning, he threw six nearly perfect innings. But he couldn’t get anybody out in the third when the Astros hit two singles, one double, two triples, and a homer to put up a five spot. Roy Oswalt was nails for Houston on the mound.

Texas Rangers v Baltimore Orioles
Perry

May 17: Texas 3, Houston 0

Gaylord Perry was in fine form for the Rangers as he kept Houston off the board. After Houston loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, Neftali Feliz came in and escaped the jam and finished a four out save. A walk to Adrian Beltre followed by a Rafael Palmeiro blast was the only mar on Nolan Ryan’s day for Houston.

May 18: Texas 6, Houston 2

The Rangers kept the good times rolling with four dingers in the finale, and captured the sixth of eight meetings between the Texas clubs. When they’re not playing each other, the teams have an identical 16-16 record, but their head-to-head games have been the difference between the Rangers landing in first place and the Astros in fourth.

Pudge Rodriguez hit his second and third homers of the series, and the Rangers continued getting better than expected pitching and defense to go along with their slugging lineup.
