May 15: Baltimore 5, Detroit 3

Detroit’s rotten start continued in Baltimore. Eddie Murray gave Hal Newhouser fits with a walk, single, and two homers, driving in four of Baltimore’s five runs. Harry Howell didn’t have too much trouble with the Detroit lineup in a complete game.

Things got even worse the next day for the Tigers as they dropped their sixth in a row and 12th of their last 15. Jack Powell gave up plenty of singles to Detroit but pitched around them well in a complete game. The Orioles grouped six singles and a walk against Tommy Bridges in the sixth inning.

Detroit manager Sparky Anderson shook things up the next day with a new look lineup. On the bench was Sam Crawford, whose bat has not been making up for bad outfield defense, and Miguel Cabrera, whose .324 wOBA has not been worthy of the DH spot. Harry Heilmann has hit but played poor defense, so he was designated to just do some hitting in this one. Usual backup outfielders Bobby Veach and Al Kaline brought their great range to the corners. All of Anderson’s defenders were rated one or two. It worked out as Bill Donovan went eight innings and gave up only three. Sparky said after the game he might stick with a similar lineup for the foreseeable future. As far as offense, Detroit mustered just four hits and four walks, but bunched all those runners into just three different innings. That and a Brooks Robinson error were enough to score five.
