Oakland Sweeps Seattle In Three Close Games

May 8: Oakland 4, Seattle 3

Felix Hernandez and Rube Waddell were both good in complete games. Hernandez didn’t have his best command though, and three of the six batters to whom he gave a free pass came around to score. The M’s hung right with them. John Olerud pinch-hit and walked with one out in the ninth. Mike Cameron pinch ran and stole second, but Waddell K’d Alvin Davis and Ichiro Suzuki rolled a ground-out to end the contest.

May 9: Oakland 5, Seattle 4

Another one-run win for Oakland that featured a failed ninth inning comeback attempt by Seattle. Alvin Davis launched a solo shot against Dennis Eckersley with one out in the ninth to get within a run, but Eck was able to finish the save by retiring Ichiro Suzuki and Edgar Martinez. The A’s couldn’t stop hitting singles in the fourth and scored four runs on six bingles.

May 10: Oakland 5, Seattle 2

Singles and walks spelled Seattle’s doom the next day as the A’s stacked up five singles and three walks in a four run sixth inning. Tim Hudson was filthy for the A’s yet again, and has allowed less than three earned runs in six of his seven starts (and only four runs in the other start). His 2.04 ERA is second in the league. The sweep took the A’s into a first-place tie with Boston.
