After Houston took two of three in the previous series in Toronto, the two teams traveled to Houston to finish off a home-and-home set.

May 9: Houston 7, Toronto 4

This one was decided largely in the bottom of the fifth. Jeff Bagwell led it off with a bomb, Moises Alou reached on a Carlos Delgado error, Lance Berkman singled, Cesar Cedeno and Bob Watson both doubled, and Art Howe reached on a Kelly Gruber error. Not pretty for Toronto. Watson went 4-for-4 with a double. Mike Cuellar retired the first 10 Toronto batters of the game, and had the shutout intact through the seventh. He ran out of gas in the eighth, hitting two batters and giving up three singles. Dave Smith relieved him and stopped the bleeding.

Ernie Whitt was the only Blue Jay to have a good day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles.

This was an excellent duel between Dave Stieb and J.R. Richard. Bob Watson made the difference when he drilled a three-run homer off Stieb with two out in the sixth. Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner completed the shutout after Richard’s seven innings.

May 11: Houston 8, Toronto 4

After no homers in the first two games, Toronto got back to their bread and butter with shots by Carlos Delgado and Lloyd Moseby. Unfortunately for Toronto, their pitchers also got back to what they’ve done best this year, which is give up homers to the other team. Four Astros went deep as the ‘Stros won five of the six consecutive games against Toronto and leap-frogged them in the standings to take over fourth place in the Expansion Division.
