mantleMay 2: New York 11, Baltimore 2

Mickey Mantle hit two round-trippers against Johnny Niggeling, bringing him into a tie for the league lead with Fred McGriff at nine. A-Rod was 3-for-4 with a homer, walk, and two stolen bases. Lou Gehrig chipped in four hits, three of them doubles. Meanwhile, the Oriole bats never could get cooking against Waite Hoyt.

A Little League Stadium Special with five bombs, including Gehrig’s ninth to join McGriff and Mantle at the top of the leader board. The Orioles dug themselves an 0-6 hole after two innings, but kept it close by getting their bats going after that. But however much the Orioles could score, the Yankees always had a response. An Eddie Murray shot with one out in the ninth got the Orioles within a run, but Mariano Rivera got Adam Jones to ground out and Cal Ripken to strikeout.

Baltimore’s ace Harry Howell was just the thing the O’s needed to salvage the last game. The dead-ball era Howell might have been throwing a squishy ball, ’cause the mighty NY bats didn’t do their usual damage. Baltimore on the other hand put up a steady attack on Lefty Gomez and Goose Gossage. Matt Wieters had three base knocks and came around to score all three times.

By the end of the series, Gehrig slipped past Sisler for the league lead in weighted runs created (30.1 to 28.1).
