Tied For First Going In, Boston Crushes Oakland In Three

May 1: Boston 4, Oakland 2

The two best teams in the league through the first month of the season met for a much anticipated series in Oakland. The home fans didn’t end up having much to cheer for. Their A’s did take a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning in the first game, but Barry Zito lost his command and walked the first three Boston batters in the eighth. In came Dennis Eckersley to try to Houdini his way out of the inning, but a Tris Speaker double and Ted Williams single plated all three of Zito’s runners. Rickey Henderson walked twice, singled, stole three bags, and scored both Oakland runs, but Lefty Grove and Jonathan Papelbon kept the rest of the Oakland lineup quiet.

Game 2: Boston 5, Oakland 0pedro

Pedro Martinez painted his finest masterpiece of the young season. Never did more than one Athletic reach base in a single inning.

Game 3: Boston 9, Oakland 1

Oakland’s Lefty Grove card is slightly better than Boston’s version, but the Boston Grove made a strong start in game one and the Oakland Grove got beat up here in game three (with no thanks to some hapless defense).

Roger Clemens had no one on base and was one out away from a second straight Boston shutout of Oakland. A Home Run Baker double and Mickey Cochrane single washed out the shutout, but it was another sobering game for Oakland. The Sox outscored the A’s 18-3 in the series, and emerged as the clear class of the league so far. Boston has no weakness that other clubs have been able to find so far, and are scoring 6.9 runs/game while allowing just 4.3.
