KC Takes Two In Tight Series With Toronto

alexMay 1: Kansas City 6, Toronto 4

Doyle Alexander brought his league-best 1.78 ERA to Kansas City, but the Royals brought him back down to Earth a bit with single runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings, and then two more in the sixth, during which Alexander was lifted. He ended the day with a less rosy 3.00 ERA. Willie Wilson and Alex Gordon each had three hits and two stolen bases.

The Royals also beat up on the next day’s Blue Jay starter, Ray Halladay, jumping out to six runs in the first three innings. They got no more, and it was barely enough after a shaky Kelvin Herrera allowed a run in the eighth to make it a one-run game. Greg Holland threw a perfect ninth. Hal McRae reached first in all four plate appearances with three singles and a HBP.

Jose Rosado took the mound as KC looked for the sweep. It was scoreless when Tony Fernandez led off the fifth and reached second base on an Alcides Escobar error. After an Ernie Whitt fly-out, Toronto strung together five straight hits to put up a four-spot. Kelly Gruber added a run with a solo shot in the seventh. Dave Stieb was good, but the Royals got close to an impressive comeback. Alex Gordon went dong with one out in the ninth to make it a one-run game, but Tom Henke whiffed Willie Wilson and pinch-hitter Amos Otis to finish it off.
