April 27: New York 6, Minnesota 4 (10 innings)

Mariano Rivera had given up two runs, but he thought he had the save nailed down in the bottom of the ninth. With his Yankees leading 4-3, the Twins had a runner on third with two outs when Stan Spence hit a dribbler right back to Rivera. Mariano threw a perfect strike to first baseman Lou Gehrig in plenty of time, but Gehrig somehow dropped the ball, and a hustling Spence was safe at first and the game was tied. If the Yankees were discouraged, they hid it well in the top of the tenth when a Mickey Mantle walk was followed by singles from Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, and Derek Jeter, and New York was back in control 6-4. Dave Righetti threw a tidy bottom of the 10th.

Harmon Killebrew grand-slammed Minnesota to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second, but it wasn’t enough against a five homer onslaught by the Bombers. The top four NY batters, Mantle, A-Rod, Gehrig, and Ruth, hit all five dingers.
