Naps & Mariners Tussle In Seattle

Game 1: Cleveland 10, Seattle 6

The Naps and Mariners were the only remaining teams to play an inter-divisional series until they met in Seattle. The Mariners had beaten up on their expansion brethren to the tune of a 12-7 start, but found the going a little tougher against the wizened Clevelanders. Game one got out of hand in a hurry as Erik Hanson and his fielders stumbled their way to allowing nine runs in the first three innings. The Naps swatted seven extra base hits.

Game 2: Cleveland 5, Seattle 3 (10 innings)

Seattle put up more of a fight the next day with Randy Johnson on the hill, but Cleveland still had the edge going into the bottom of the ninth. Doug Jones was brought in to protect the 3-2 Naps lead. John Olerud led off with a triple and Kyle Seager quickly singled him home to send the game to extras. But Seattle hurler Tom Wilhelmsen walked three of the four batters he faced in the top of the 10th, and two of them came home on a Tris Speaker single off of Arthur Rhodes. Cody Allen threw a perfect bottom of the 10th.

Game 3: Seattle 11, Cleveland 3

Seattle really got into the swing to salvage the final game of the series, abetted by some horrendous Cleveland fielding and eight strong innings from King Felix. Kyle Seager went yard and Mike Cameron 3-for-4 with a double and triple. Seattle ended their first inter-divisional series as the only expansion team above .500.

So far the Original Division is winning 61% of the games against the Expansion Division (22-14).
