Game 2: Minnesota 3, Texas 2 (12 innings)

This one was a doozy. Both teams put up a two-spot in the second inning, but that was all they could get off of starters Gaylord Perry and Jim Shaw. Once the bullpens took over, the Rangers still never threatened in the 10th, 11th, or 12th. Two Texas relievers were similarly stingy for two innings, but then Joe Mauer led off the bottom of the 12th with a single, Rod Carew flew out, Mickey Vernon, the hottest hitter in the league to start the season, singled Mauer over to third, and Tony Oliva knocked him in with a single of his own. The teams combined for 21 singles, but no one managed an extra-base hit in the 12-inning affair.

Game 3: Minnesota 8, Texas 1

Walter Johnson vs. Rangers-years Fergie Jenkins is a bit of a mis-match on paper, and it played out that way on the field this time. Johnson made short work of the Texas line-up, allowing a single, unearned run on a Goose Goslin error. Mauer, Vernon, and Kirby Puckett all doubled in a four-run third inning.
