Toronto Claims Two Wins In Homer-Happy Series v. Detroit

Game 1
Detroit 11, Toronto 5

Not much drama in the Tigers win as Juan Guzman continued his frustrating start to the season. He’s only made four starts, but a 13.75 ERA never feels very good. Shaun Marcum didn’t fare much better in 3.1 relief innings. Every Toronto hitter managed a hit, six of them bunched up in a five-run eighth inning that didn’t put too much of a dent in the Tigers 11-run lead.

Game 2
Toronto 6, Detroit 5

Carlos Delgado and Shawn Green both hit dingers to stay among the league leaders. Delgado also added two doubles with his white-hot bat. The Tigers took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth but let the Blue Jays back in the game with some sloppy fielding. Alan Trammell’s error let Roberto Alomar reach, and after a McGriff double and Delgado blast, it was a tie game. Then in the bottom of the ninth, an Alomar single, Jose Bautista walk, and Delgado two-out double off John Hiller equaled a walk-off win for Toronto.

Game 3
Toronto 8, Detroit 4

Norm Cash homered for the third straight game, but Detroit’s defense, which could be an issue all season, again flopped. Norm Cash and Alan Trammell errors plus five hits and two walks added up to a seven-run sixth and satisfying series win for T.O.
